The Anticipation

by Maggie Grinnell

“I’ll don’t know why I am so nervous” she thought.  “It’s not like this is the very first date I have ever been on.”

She hoped that the rest of her night would go better than the omen she just got from the wide run in her stockings.

After the silver earrings and bracelet were fastened together, she headed for the car.

She has been waiting for this night for a long time.

It didn’t even matter that there were dark clouds hovering overhead and a sprinkle of water in the air.

With every turn of the steering wheel, her stomach twisted into tighter knots.

She stood at his front door and rang his doorbell with every ounce of anticipation about to overflow.

As he escorted her inside,

she noticed that her eyes had closed slightly due to the candles shining brightly all throughout the room.

Although the mood was romantic and she has known this man for 3 weeks,

she still couldn’t wipe the sweat off her palms fast enough.

As he was cleaning the dinner dishes, she looked out the window after hearing some sort of tapping sound.

Her nerves were calmed by two strong hands secured on her shoulders.

As she turned around, he kissed her long and soft.

With the sweet smell of rain and a glow from the lighted candles,

she knew that there was nothing to be nervous about.
